Portugal was 100% renewable!
More great news from the world of renewables! Last weekend Portugal was completely powered by renewable electricity comprising hydro, solar PV, and wind power.
PV Magazine has reported that Portugal was completely powered by renewable electricity last weekend. With 172GWh of renewable electricity generation against 131.1GWh of electricity consumption. This is brilliant news for anyone monitoring Western Europe’s transition to renewable electricity supply.
Moreover, for anyone interested from an economic perspective this means Portugal has imported no electricity and has indeed instead been exporting it to its neighbours. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could do this in the UK? Indeed, at the time of writing my GivEnergy app for my own solar PV system shows that the UK’s National Grid is currently importing 11.9% of our electricity (unsurprisingly with Storm Ciaran we are producing 41.8% of our electricity from wind power).
With all the fear a lot of us feel towards the climate crisis fuelled by the burning of petrochemicals for electricity generation it is great to read stories like this! We are making progress as a society as we transition to renewable electricity but we will need to all do our bit if we are to continue making progress as a country.
