Cornish Company Leads on Tidal

As an island nation it is surprising we don't look more seriously at tidal energy, but one Cornish company is looking to change that.

We don’t look at tidal energy that often at Gaia Renewables (it’s quite a hard technology to implement at someone’s home) but that doesn’t take away from how awesome it is as a potential source of renewable energy. It is all well and good to see that solar PV has hit a tipping point where it will make up a significant portion of our renewable energy capacity, but diversifying electricity generation with tidal, wind, geothermal, hydro is the best way to ensure the resiliency of our electricity supply (read “Designing diversified renewable energy systems to balance multisector performance“).

That’s why recent news reported on by Business Cornwall is just so great! A fellow Cornish renewable technology company HydroWing has been awarded the contract for a 10MW tidal stream energy project in Wales. Thanks to the governments latest Contracts for Difference round the company will begin developing this cutting-edge project at Morlais tidal energy site in Anglesey.

The technology behind this project is also incredibly exciting. HydroWing will be deploying Tocardo T-3 turbines as a result of the joint venture acquisition of Holland-based tidal technology business Tocardo in 2020. We highly recommend exploring the HydroWing website just to appreciate how great these turbines look (no they are not the ones we used in the picture of the article).
